  Is 1975 explicitly written in old publications ?

  i've been hearing about 1975 for decades but i've never found a publication where this date is explicitly written.. do somebody have references ?.

  many if not most of us have heard of criticisms of the god of the old testament.

  you can find these criticisms on many websites.. how do you explain to an honest hearted person why god acted the way they did?.

  Thx once again for your reply and I'm sorry it was under duress :). Hope you are feeling better.

  I probably deserved that e-spanking you gave me but please be assured my questions and comments were a sincere attempt to understand a little more about the Jewish faith.

  What I meant by disappointment was the revealing of the Messiah over the centuries. My (limited) understanding is that there have been various 'Messiahs' or nearly "Messiahs' that have come and gone. Do Jews feel that the Messiah is overdue?

  Thanks for replying to my post.

  It seems to me that the picture you are painting of the Jewish culture is one of constantly shifting ideas. It almost feels like the Jews themselves have spent 5000 yrs trying to crystallise the meanings of their own writings. ( I use the words writings instead of 'beliefs' because you suggest the Jews don't 'believe' anything. :) )

  I really hate to say this - and please forgive me if I am over-simplifying, it reminds me of a printing company that had a lot of expectations that it published to the world, and when these expectations weren't fulfilled, they frantically moved the goal-posts around and over-complicated something that should be straight-forward.

  Having said that, Jewish girls are pretty hot. (Wonder Woman, I'm talking about you.)

  I find the Jewish culture and mind-set fascinating- so thank you for your overview on these points.

  A few points you mentioned left me a little confused,

  You say that Jews view the OT as liturgical, not historical. According to biblical scholars, there is no evidence outside the bible for the existence of Noah, Abraham, David or Solomon. No evidence of the exodus from Egypt. No evidence of Moses. Yet, don't the lives and deeds of these patriarchs form the bedrock of Judaism? So , scholars say these guys don't exist outside the bible and you say that Jews don't seem to care if they existed or not , then WHY bother living a Jewish life , either strictly, or not so strictly? I know Jews that won't listen to a football game on the radio during the Sabbath. There are many other rules that govern Jewish life that Jews are careful to observe. That tells me that some Jews at least, are fearful of displeasing God, even though he doesn't exist...does exist....doesn't....does?

  You seem to imply that a reason to believe in God is simply because the Jews exist due to the covenant with God. That statement at first glance has a whiff of arrogance about it. It seems to paint the picture that the Jews believe themselves to be over and above any 'normal' religion and that the usual rules don't apply to them because they are automatically Gods chosen group. Yet, is this not simply a 'belief', just like the overlapping generation 'belief'? Just because you believe it, doesn't make it truth.

  Lastly your statement, 'God won't pull any strings unless we allow it' left me speechless. That tells me Jews- like many other fundamentalist groups, consider themselves to be superior to other human beings because they are 'special' to the creator.

  This has gone a bit off topic but @David_Jay's comments were very interesting.

  As for the God of the OT allowing nasty things to happen, my short answer is that's how things were back then. God was simply worked into the text to suit the contemporary customs.

  I'm at work so I haven't had a chance to read all the posts here.

  After watching the video my opinion is that they are not looking to set up another date. It seems to me that they are actually doing the opposite.

  There are now grandparents in the org that truly believed Armageddon would arrive before they finished school.

  This video is aimed directly at those of us born in the 60's and 70's who lived through the 1975 foolishness and the overlapping generation foolishness.

  The message I'm hearing is, ' you now have to face the fact that you will grow old and die'.

  Skin, you mentioned a time when congs were told to get rid of the old literature. When exactly did that happen? A jw friend told me about this and how his cong literally burned the old stuff.

  I was already fading when this happened so I missed the whole thing.

  Is there anything on this forum about it?

  but then i noticed this recently published story in the south china morning post (a newspaper once owned by rupert murdoch, but now owned by jack ma, one of china's richest men).. quote:.

  i know this has been discussed many times, but i was watching a news story about female genital mutilation (not female circumcision) and segued mentally into why the hassle about male babies having to be circumcised, christians especially.

  even the wts flipflops on this...... if adam, the first perfect man, not under the jewish law code, was given a foreskin by god as an aspect of his physical perfection, why then do so many "christian" people have their boy babies circumcised?.

  if a health issue....why did god create the perfect man, adam, with a foreskin?.

  Even if we maintained good health and lived to a decent age of 70- 80 as it mentions in the bible and then died, isn’t that paying what we owe? We still lose everything. Our loved ones grieve us.

  I was always told as a child that loving God would not allow people to suffer in a hell-fire after-life. So why is it ok to suffer in life?
